What Is Generative Engine Optimization?

What Is Generative Engine Optimization?

GEO is the practice of being cited inside AI answers rather than ranked in a list of links. Here is what it actually involves.

Generative engine optimization is one of those terms that sounds like a rebrand of something older. It is not quite, and the difference is worth understanding before anyone sells you a package built on it.

The plain definition

GEO is the practice of making it more likely that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews cite your business when they produce an answer.

SEO competes for a position in a list of links. GEO competes to be inside the paragraph the user actually reads. In the second case there may be no list, and often no click.

Why anyone is bothering

Because a meaningful share of commercial research now happens inside an answer rather than on a results page. Studies through late 2025 put roughly 28 percent of high-intent commercial queries running through AI surfaces, with AI Overviews appearing on a large share of informational searches and ChatGPT past 800 million weekly users.

If a buyer asks an engine who the good providers are and never sees a results page, ranking fourth for that term is worth considerably less than it used to be.

What it actually involves

Less than the acronym suggests, and more than most people want to hear.

Engines draw disproportionately from a small set of trusted domains. Around 30 domains account for about two thirds of citations within a topic. So the practical work is being present, accurately, on sources those engines already use, and being consistent across them so the facts corroborate rather than conflict.

Structure helps at the margins. Clear headings, direct answers to real questions, and content that can be lifted as a quotable passage all make extraction easier. But formatting a page nobody cites does not produce a citation.

Where the industry is overselling

There is a growing market in GEO packages that promise visibility in AI answers for a monthly fee.

Be sceptical of guaranteed placement in an answer, because the provider does not control the model. Be sceptical of citation reporting without a stated method, because results vary by query, by engine and by week. And be sceptical of anyone who does not mention that the engines rewrote their own source preferences inside a single month in 2025.

The honest summary

GEO is real as a goal and immature as a service category. The durable part of it is unglamorous: have accurate, published, third-party material about your business on domains that engines already trust, and keep the facts consistent.

That is mostly a press problem wearing a new name.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

01

What is generative engine optimization?

The practice of making it more likely that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews cite your business when they produce an answer. SEO competes for a link position; GEO competes to be in the paragraph the user reads.

02

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO aims at ranking in a list of results. GEO aims at being cited inside a synthesised answer, where there may be no list and often no click. The underlying work overlaps, because both reward credible third-party sources.

03

Can a GEO agency guarantee visibility in AI answers?

No, because they do not control the model. Be sceptical of guaranteed placement, of citation reporting without a stated method, and of anyone who does not mention that engines rewrote their own source preferences inside a month in 2025.
