Why Reddit Stopped Being the Answer

Why Reddit Stopped Being the Answer

Reddit went from dominating ChatGPT citations to a fraction of them in about a month. Here is what happened and what replaced it.

For two years the standard advice about AI visibility was to get mentioned on Reddit. Then it stopped working, quickly, and for reasons no marketer could have influenced.

What happened

Through 2024 and into 2025, Reddit was one of the two most cited domains in ChatGPT answers in the US, sitting around 12 to 13 percent of citations alongside Wikipedia.

Around September 2025, tracking showed Reddit's appearance rate falling from roughly 60 percent of responses to about 10. The timing lined up with OpenAI's content licensing arrangements and a wider shift toward professionally produced sources.

What replaced it

Publishers and professional networks. Forbes approximately doubled its citation share over the same period. LinkedIn gained. Among news domains, PR Newswire posted the largest increase of any source.

The substitution is the point. The engine did not stop needing third-party material about companies. It changed its mind about which third parties count.

The lesson, which is not about Reddit

An entire visibility tactic stopped working in about a month, because of a commercial decision made inside one company.

That is the real finding. Anything built on one platform's position in a citation ranking is exposed to that platform's commercial arrangements, which you do not control and are rarely told about in advance.

What survived the shift was the thing that had been working for twenty years in ordinary search: being written about by credible publishers.

What a sensible person does with this

Stop optimising for a specific source and start building the kind of evidence that transfers. Published articles on established mastheads were valuable before the shift, during it, and after.

That is a less exciting strategy than finding the current loophole. It is also the one that did not evaporate in September.

The honest caveat

The same warning applies to everything in this post. The numbers quoted here are snapshots from tracking studies, and the next shift will be as unannounced as the last one.

Treat citation rankings as weather rather than climate, and build for the climate.
